Hampshire has an enviable blend of countryside, coast and city, being blessed with the natural beauty of two National Parks, approximately 230 miles of stunning coastline and 3 bustling and cosmopolitan cities.

It is also home to some wonderful seaside towns, a cute bundle of picturesque villages and some of Britain’s most enchanting castles and great houses, plus vast areas of unspoilt countryside. Inland to the west lies the New Forest National Park, home to approximately 3,000 wild roaming New Forest ponies and to the east lies the glorious chalk-based South Downs famed for its breath taking scenic walks.

Hampshire’s coast runs from Highcliffe on the Dorset border, past Southampton and Portsmouth, (plus everything in between), right up to Chichester Harbour in West Sussex, about approximately 230 miles in total. This coastline is accessed via The Solent, the stretch of water between the mainland coast and the Isle of Wight, which is one of the busiest coastal zones in England, with Portsmouth having more shipping movements than any other port in the UK.

Southampton lies on the edge of the New Forest and is a bustling container port. It is blessed with a deep natural harbour making it suitable for the largest of ships and tankers, including some of the world’s biggest and luxurious cruise liners. It was from Southampton docks that the Titanic set out on its ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912 and to learn more visit the SeaCity Museum or visit the Solent Sky Museum, the birth place of The Spitfire that played such a role in helping win the battle of the skys in the 2nd world war. Alternately Westquay has a fantastic shopping mail with over 130 shops and eateries, Cinema de Lux and Hollywood Bowl’s bowling lanes.

Amongst other things Portsmouth is home to it’s Historic Dockyard, where The Mary Rose, Nelson’s HMS Victory and the HMS Warrior helps to make the area special. The waterfront is also blessed with the wonderful Gunwharf Quays, a vibrant complex set around the quayside on the mouth of the harbour which is also the waterside home of the iconic Spinnaker Tower which is the 2nd tallest publicly accessible building in the UK. The tower soars 560 feet above the ground and offers unrivalled views over Gosport, Portsmouth, further inland and out over The Solent towards The Isle of Wight and as far as the eye can see.

Winchester, positioned on the edge of The South Downs National Park was the former 9th century capital of legionary King Alfred’s England, proudly boasting it’s splendid Medieval Cathedral and is often described as ‘England as it ought to be’. Nearby are the ruins of Wolvesey Castle and the still working 18th century Winchester City Corn Mill, plus there is The Great Hall in Winchester Castle which for over 700 years has housed the mysterious round table linked to  King Arthur and his famous knights.

Winchester College is the oldest continuously running school in the country and has been used as a location to film a number of blockbusters such as Harry Potter and Les Misérables. Today the city is home to the country’s largest farmer’s market with bustling shopping streets, lively street theatre and a thriving contemporary arts scene attracting over four million people visitors to the ancient city every year.

Reviews from families

Century House is a pleasant, clean and bright property in a good location for exploring Portsmouth and Southampton.  The kitchen was well stocked, the accommodation comfortable and the neighbourhood quiet. A highlight each morning was taking the dog for a walk in the local park overlooking the Spinnaker Tower and the Royal Navy’s two new aircraft carriers. Area-wise, we mainly explored the historic Portsmouth docks and Spinnaker Tower, Southampton West Quay and the University as our daughter hopes to go there later this year. We did a trip to Portchester Castle towards the end of our stay which was a worth a mention.  The naval aspect of our week gave this holiday a very distinctive focus, and it is a unique selling point of the area. Many thanks to you and the whole team for making our stay in Gosport so welcoming and comfortable. The house worked brilliantly for our family of 6. Check in was very helpful and straightforward.

I booked Bury Villa for four nights over my 50th birthday. We were a party of 15, (10 adults and 5 kids) and we had the most pleasurable and comfortable stay. The check in was very easy, and we were given plenty of information and advice for our stay. The rooms were immaculate, with plenty of storage, cosy seating, and the kitchen is well stocked for catering. The games room was a massive hit and we had some epic rounds of hide and seek! We also had a beautiful meal at the Anglesey Hotel if you are looking for somewhere to eat.  We had a real ball and loved the house, it’s perfect for adults and kids and none of us wanted to go home. Katharine – Feb 2022.

Complete Accommodation

It really made all the difference with it being so family friendly with the use of high chair, travel cot etc. And the older children loved the trampoline. We were all impressed how well equipped the kitchen was with regards to cutlery and cooking utensils. All bedrooms were really good sizes, clean and comfortable. We found Stoke Villas ideal being a large group and also a group with children.

Our party consisted of 3 generations of the family ranging from 10 years old to just turning 60 and we were all together to celebrate a 60th birthday. We were made to feel at home right from the start of the holiday, being met by Ken, who carefully explained everything to us. The Dairy House was extremely clean inside, with welcoming lights left on in each of the rooms. It seemed as if nothing was too much trouble for Ken, who happily sent us a text message later, recommending some local take-aways. The internal accommodation was just as in the photos/video on the website, and provided ample space for our group of 12 people. The dining room with its very large table was much appreciated, as it meant that we could all gather around it to eat together. We made very good use of this room, for playing board games/cards as well as eating. The biggest hit however was the games room, where the table tennis and pool table were enjoyed by everyone, both young and old(er). Unfortunately, the weather was not that good during our stay, but we still managed to enjoy the private garden. The house was well situated, being within easy reach of attractions and amenities. We particularly enjoyed catching the ferry for the short crossing to Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth Dockyards. Marwell Zoo is within easy reach, and our visit there was a hit with everyone. Just a few minutes drive away is Lee on Solent, where we went to play crazy golf, at an extremely well maintained course. Ken was a very welcoming host, and The Dairy House has been thoughtfully equipped inside with everything needed for larger groups of people. Complete Holiday Homes was also extremely kind in returning some items to us that we left behind during packing, I would not hesitate to recommend The Dairy House for a family/group holiday.

We had a fantastic trip and thought Grove Lodge was a fabulous space for a family holiday. The number of rooms allowed a bit of quiet time for those not used to having toddlers around. We all appreciated the lovely garden and one of the toddlers adored the trampoline! We enjoyed the walk to Stokes Bay on several occasions and the children were very excited with the ferry to Gunwharf Quays. The provision of highchairs and stair gates made for a much more relaxed holiday. Complete Holiday Homes were very thorough and response time was fast.
